History of Hanahan

The story of Hanahan dates back centuries, when the lands surrounding Goose Creek supported plantation communities tied to the early development of Charleston. Over time, the area evolved alongside the region’s growth, eventually becoming an important hub for transportation, infrastructure, and industry.

The modern identity of Hanahan began taking shape in the early twentieth century with the creation of the Goose Creek Reservoir and the construction of the Saxon Pumping Station in 1903, which supplied fresh water to Charleston.

In 1973, residents voted to officially incorporate Hanahan as a city, establishing a strong sense of civic identity that continues to guide its growth and development.
